When it comes to headwear I am a mere neophyte. To me Frank Sinatra was class incarnate;the quintessential "class act". Seems like almost everything he did,he did with grace and poise.FS`s vocal and acting careers are still iconic and stand the test of time. The Chairman of the Board`s attire was always fashionable and in good taste...from well-tailored suit and cufflinks to that perfectly just-so tilted,small-brimmed fedora hat. Look at almost any album cover of Frank`s from the late 1950`s to mid-1960`s and you`ll see how a hat is meant to be worn.It just looks right.
Can anyone tell me more about those classic and classy hats that Sinatra seemed to sport in so many of his movies and on his album covers? I`ve heard those vintage 50`s & 60`s smaller-brimmed fedoras referred to as "porkpie" hats and have referred to them that way for years. Technically, this is incorrect as a true "porkpie" hat has an even, straight brim with a flat crown(ala Gene Hackman`s lid in The French Connection). What were the brand and type that Sinatra usually wore?Anybody? What was an average crown and brim size for these classic hats?
What do you folks feel was the nicest looking hat(s) that Frank Sinatra wore?Fabric/material,color,band width/color,etc.
Which manufacturers offer a true vintage 1960`s style Sinatra hat in 2009? I am in the market for a nice,everyday-wear hat that has that Sinatra "old school" look, yet would work well with both casual and nicer attire. Suggestions as to color and fabric/material?Is the most versitle color:black, dark blue or grey? What is generally considered to be the "right" way to wear such a hat;even on the head, tilted slightly forward or tilted slightly to the back?
I apologize for my ignorance but am hoping to get some good feedback from others who are "hat people" as I only recently began wearing hats(other than baseball caps).
Thank You in Advance!
